Estate administration papers, 1861-1873.

A collection of receipts, bills, and other items relating to the administration of the estate of Newburyport silversmith William Moulton who died in 1861, leaving a widow and several children. The administrator of the estate was William Graves, another resident of Newburyport. Included in the collection are bills for the funeral; bills for house repairs, building a privy, and wallpaper; an agreement by the heirs that real estate left by Moulton was to be sold; and a number of receipts for distribution of money and household goods as provided by the will. As well, there are a few bills for books and food, one for fire insurance, and one receipt for city taxes. The collection does not include a copy of the will.

Captain William Graves lived at 56 High Street, Newburyport, Massachusetts. He was the son of William (ca.1785-ca.1851) and Mary Pike Graves. (Apparently, however, Mary Pike had died earlier and William then married Susannah, who was listed as his widow in the city directories.) Edward Graves (who lived with the widow Susannah) was probably an uncle. Capt. Graves served as an alderman of Newburyport in 1854, 1856-1858, and 1863; he was mayor in 1866. William Moulton was a silversmith in Newburyport, Massachusetts, and was from a family of silversmiths. His wife was Statira Preble Moulton. A document in this collection lists the following children: Joseph (a jeweler in Newburyport), Harriet Moulton (Mrs. John N.) Kent of Newbury, Nathan N. of Ramsey, Illinois, Mary, Rebecca, and William H. By April 1864, Mary, Rebecca, and William H. were deceased and had left no children.
